The
Chambers Dictionary says:
Restoration noun 1. the act or process of restoring.
2. the act of giving back something
lost or stolen. 3. something restored or given
back. 4. a model or
reconstruction (eg of a ruin, extinct animal, etc). 5. the act of returning to a former
and higher status, rank, etc. With audio, it is a little more complex than this simple definition implies. On December 4, 1877 Thomas Edison became the first person to ever record and play back the human voice. Since then, audio recording and reproduction has gone from a few thin scratchy minutes on a wax cylinder to a zillion songs on a thumb-sized player. Along the way, in the name of progress, a myriad of recording formats have emerged (and died). Few modern home hi-fi systems can still play audio cassettes, much less 78's or vinyl records. Even in the professional recording studio environment, it is becoming much harder to find well-maintained DAT and Open-Reel tape machines. Unfortunately, even with the best of storage conditions, tape and disc recordings degrade over time. At Soundwarp, with the notable exception of wax cylinders and wire recordings, we can transfer, restore and enhance almost any mono or stereo recording. |
